I binge watched Sunderland Till I Die recently, that's what made me think of this.
We could easily have gone to the dogs like that.
They got a 45k crowd whilst in the 3rd division, which is quite impressive.

one of these two clubs has a European trophy the other does not , therefore West Ham are the bigger club .

Probably. But I wonder how many times they've finish above us in the league in the last 50 years, I doubt it's more than a handful?

Chelsea fan I know will never forgive us for losing to Sunderland in a match played after the 1980 Cup Final, thus ensuring Sunderland, and not Chelsea, went up.
So, even some of Sunderland's success is dependent on our success (and the celebration after it).

We used to do this at school, working out how big clubs were using a top trumps kind of criteria, average attendance, years in top flight, European trophies, league and both cup wins, even stuff like away support.

West Ham are bigger. Not by as much as some think though. They've got a proper following and early history is very decent, they won the league 6 times but have done even less than we have in the modern era.
